Mexico is largely a cash-only society, and the majority of stores and restaurants in San Miguel de Allende cannot accept credit cards. Most businesses in San Miguel de Allende do not accept dollars (or other foreign currencies), except at some of the larger stores and hotels. One of the simplest ways to have easy access to cash is to use an ATM card, which will give you the best exchange rate for pesos. Verify that your bank doesn't charge a special fee to use automatic teller machines in other countries.
